From "Lucy" and Kathy Bates, Merry Christmas

The soulful gaze of my canine companion is a great way to open my eyes each morning. My interpretation of this is that she looks at me with affection, her fortress of comfort and safety, and also her unending source of food!! Maybe it is a good thing that we can't REALLY know what they are thinking, because what if it is bad?? What if she is really thinking "When is this ridiculous creature going to haul herself out of bed 'cause I am bored stiff, need to pee, and want my breakfast"! But despite that uncertainty, I really don't feel that is what is going on. Dog's do have facial expressions, and Lucy's soft brown eyes and gently waving tail as she rests her head on the side of my bed tell me that I am her best human, and she is my best dog. The connection between dogs and people has been documented for centuries, surely we can't have totally gotten this wrong? So during this Christmas season full of gifts and eating and a social whirl of activity, I hope that you are able to reflect on the true spirit of the season. May your homes be full of the warm beacon of love and affection, safety and acceptance, peace and joy. "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given . . . and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6,7) My sincere wishes to you for a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Kathy Bates
