In memory of Pablo Breidenbaugh

This painting is in memory of Pablo, owned by Ken Breidenbaugh. One of the harder aspects of my job as a vet is to help people cope with the grief of losing their pets. I often hear people say some kind of variation of "I will never have another dog/cat because this is too hard". When I had to put my first dog Ruby down, I realized it was a pain I needed to experience first hand so that I would be more prepared to help others deal with making these difficult decisions. I have been forced to see that every living thing is fragile and temporary, a savage truth that sometimes I want to cover my eyes and ears and turn away from. I have come to feel it is a tremendous act of courage to risk your heart in love to anything, but especially to a creature with a life span so much shorter than our own. So I salute the Breidenbaugh family and all of you who fly in the face of certain loss and abandon your hearts to the generous, simple and captivating love of a pet. I celebrate Pablo.
